Black Sheep Newsletter Writers Guide
The Black Sheep Newsletter is always interested in submissions that relate to fiber producing animals, their husbandry and the use of their fibers. Typically we use articles addressing all levels of readership experience, from encouraging the novice to inspiring long time veterans. In general, we do not solicit articles, our readers submit them.
If you have not recently read the Newsletter, it may be useful for you to read a few of the past issues to become familiar with the style and tone of the BSN. Articles should be of original material; new approaches to familiar topics are encouraged. If you include quotes or references to other published sources, please include a bibliography. We prefer articles that are not published elsewhere in other sheep and/or fiber related magazines. If you are simultaneously submitting your ideas to other publishers, please let us know.
Material in the Black Sheep Newsletter may not be reproduced without written permission.
When
you have written an article, send us a copy along with any
accompanying photographs or sketches. Be sure you keep a copy of
everything as well. Please include your address, telephone number and
e-mail address (if you have one) in your cover letter. We reserve the
right to edit submitted material as necessary, to match the style and
fit the space available in the magazine.
Submit
articles to: Black
Sheep Newsletter, 25455 NW Dixie Mtn RD, Scappoose, OR 97056 or
email: bsnewsltr@earthlink.net
Format:
Ideally,
your work will be typed on 8½" x 11" inch, white
paper. Handwritten submissions are accepted as long as they are
legible. If you prepare your article on a computer you may submit it
via email or on CD. We work with PC's, use Microsoft Word, PageMaker
and Corel Draw. We have conversion programs to read most other word
processor files and can easily open RTF files.
Label all
diagrams clearly and include captions for diagrams and photos. Also,
please include the name of the photographer.
Length
of articles: We
can use articles, large, small and in between, ranging from 400 words
to over 2000 words. Lengthy subjects can be turned into a
series.
Photographs
and Diagrams: Good
visuals make articles more interesting to the reader. Clear, crisp
drawings done with black ink on white paper are best. Photographs
should also be crisp and of good contrast. Keep in mind that when
viewing a color photo of, for example, a sheep against blue sky, the
human eye can distinguish the shape. When this same color photograph
is printed in black and white on newsprint, the contrast the eye
perceives may be lost. A photo copy of your picture can be a good
check for contrast. Remember to label photographs but please do not
write on the back of them. Post-it™ notes or removable tape
work best.
Compensation: The BSN is unable to reimburse writers for their articles except with an exchange advertising or additional copies of the issue in which the article appears.
Thank you for your interest in the Black Sheep Newsletter. We look forward to working with you.
